Ok, I got it
Newland Hall Fishery
Newland Hall, Roxwell, Chelmsford has four lakes.   One being a members only water and three day-ticket lakes of varying size and difficulty.   Mainly Carp venue.   There are other species to be caught.   There is plenty of parking available in the main car park but none lakeside.   There are toilets on site and a food van most days.   The nearest tackle shop is Trent Tackle, 48A Trent Road, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 2LQ (Tel: 01245-355521) which is about 3 miles away.   The lakes are situated on the site of a Manor House which hosts weddings and corporate functions.

Park Lake
Pegged for 15. It is stocked to a similar density to the Moat Lake and therefore is perfect for pleasure fishing and small matches.   This is a very easy water and waggler fishing with corn and pellet is always guaranteed to bag plenty of fish.

I've used it on a regular basis for coaching as it is a good water to teach on as you are sure to catch.   Mainly common and mirror carp from a few ounces to around 3lb-4lb, there are a few fish that go into double figures but the best taken out of there on one of my coaching sessions was a 4lb mirror.

Moat Lake
Pegged for 30.   It is very heavily stocked with common and mirror carp and roach.   The average size of fish is smaller than the Brook Lake, which makes it perfect for both match and pleasure fishing.   Match winning weights regularly exceed 300lb.

Again, this is not what you would class as a difficult water.   It is very easy to have multiple catches of fish in a day.   Waggler, feeder or carp tactics all work well on this water.   Pellet, corn, boilie or maggot will all catch prolifically.   Best during a coaching session was a 5lb common, though the fish in here do reach upper doubles.

Brook Lake
Pegged for 50.   It is heavily stocked with common and mirror carp to over 30lb, roach and tench.   The lake is ideal for carp, match or pleasure fishing.

I've only fished on here a couple of times and though the fishing is a bit harder there are still plenty of fish to be caught.   Carp tactics are the best method though the fish can be caught on all other methods.   Average weight of fish in here is mid doubles so strong gear needs to be used as it would not be unusual to hook a 20lb plus.   There are plenty of roach in here and waggler fished maggot is certainly the way to get amongst them.   During one session we had roach to just over 1lb on red maggot fished mid water.
I met Steve in the car park of Newland Hall on Saturday 1st November for a day session on Moat Lake. The forecast wasn't looking too good but we were hopeful of having a good days fishing.

We went to the far side of the lake and set up opposite the end of the island where we had seen some fish moving. As Steve set up his gear I started baiting up 2 areas of the lake to try and get the fish in on the feed, it didn't take long to see signs of fish in the baited area as clouds of silt started coming up and the odd swirl broke the water surface.

Steve started off with maggots on a size 16 hook to 3.5lb hooklink on 4lb mainline with a 5BB Waggler, trickling in bait over the top of his float fished under an overhanging tree in the margins. It took about 30 seconds for the first fish of the day to show itself and pick up Steve's bait. After a short fight, Steve had the first of many Carp for the day, and a personal best to boot. The p.b. didn't last too long though as Steve managed to beat it several times during the session. Maggots accounted for most of the fish though he went on to pellets for a while and they scored well too.

The rain started early afternoon and with it the fish switched off the pellets, after 10 minutes without a bite Steve went back onto maggots and started catching again immediately.

Steve was the only person on the lake catching on a regular basis and must have outcaught them all by nearly 2 - 1, no mean feat when there were 5 other anglers on the lake.

It just goes to show that location and feeding are so important now the weather is cooling down and the fish are starting to slow up a bit.

The weather gradually got worse and everyone had packed up and gone hours before Steve decided he had had enough. The light was failing and the rain was pouring and we had a pile of soaking wet fishing tackle to sort out, but both of us had had a good day and look forward to the next trip.
15th September 2008
I started an Angling Course with Chalvedon School, Basildon coaching some of their students.

We used Park Lake for the first three weeks as the students were learning how to set up and fish then we moved over to Moat Lake where the fish are a little larger and there is the potential to catch something half decent.

The course has been very successful and all the students have caught plenty of fish ranging from a few ounces to several pounds.   All the students seem to have enjoyed the course immensely and I would like to thank Newland Hall for the use of their facilities almost every Monday since the course began.
